~for my sister, Susan

Butterflies are peaceful, graceful, beautiful, gentle, observant, non-violent and butterflies have short lives. All of these characterize my sister, Susan, who passed suddenly and  very young.

During that time, it was difficult to see all of her beautiful characteristics.  Her death occurred in the springtime and while we were outside playing with her children, trying to piece together the puzzle of our family, it always seemed as through there was a butterfly just hovering  around and watching over us. Our family felt a presence of peace when this butterfly was with us and I learned there is also a belief that butterflies are sent to us for whatever reason we want to believe.

I once came across the proverb, “Just when the caterpillar thought her life was over, she became a butterfly”, and this brought peace to me.  My butterfly tattoo reminds me of my sister and all of her beautiful qualities. It also reminds me of the fragility of life. Her spirit will always be a part of me.
